Shifting from Acclaim to Rage: Right-wing Reaction to Epstein File Disclosure is Divided.
Conservative reactions to the limited disclosure of files involving the Epstein case have been mixed, with certain backers of the former Trump administration highlighting the prominent presence of former President Clinton and other Democratic figures in photographs, while different voices lamented how heavy censorship cast former President Trump and GOP members in a unfavorable manner.
Justice Department Justifies Redactions with Strong Rhetoric
Administration officials justified the heavily censored sections with fervent hyperbole. “Never in American the nation's history has a President or the Justice Department been this transparent with the American people about such a delicate legal issue,” stated Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche, who released a six-page letter outlining the censorship process.
Questions Prompted by Blacked-Out Sections
While Trump's identity and likeness are visible in some of the documents, the widespread black blocks prompt serious concerns about what may be hidden behind them. A number of Republicans immediately demanded increased openness.
“The public are furious and disengaging,” wrote Georgia Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene.
In a social media post, Republican Congressman Thomas Massie asserted the censorship break the law, and suggested that a future Congress may attempt to remove the Attorney General, Pam Bondi, for that violation. “Unfortunately, today’s document release egregiously does not adhere to both the spirit and the wording of the law,” he added.
A Faction of Rightwing Commentators Swing In Support of the Release
However, a segment of rightwing pundits and Trump loyalists swung firmly behind the administration.
The release—from a DOJ run by close Trump associate Pam Bondi—includes scores of pages that are entirely censored, and many of the individuals depicted in photographs have their identities obscured.
Yet a few are not, featuring prominent figures like Bill Clinton, pop singer Michael Jackson, and scholar Noam Chomsky. The presence of the former president, in particular, allowed some conservative figures to launch the attack.
“This is quite ironic how the political left falsely claimed Donald Trump of being a sex offender, only for the administration's Justice Department to release documents that depict Bill Clinton skinny dipping with a convicted sex offender,” stated right-wing activist Laura Loomer.
“New Epstein Files show Bill Clinton without a shirt in a jacuzzi with a woman that is other than his wife Hillary Clinton,” wrote attorney Rogan O’Handley. “There’s only 1 reason Epstein would take pictures of a US President with a young woman in a hot tub: Blackmail.”
Former President Spokesperson Issues Statement
Bill Clinton has consistently said he was aware of no illegal actions by Epstein and has not been alleged to have participated in any wrongdoing. “The White House has not been concealing those files for months only to dump them late on a Friday to shield Bill Clinton,” his representative Angel Ureña stated in a comment.
“This is about shielding officials from what comes next, or from information they will try and conceal permanently. Therefore they can publicize as many low-quality decades-old photos as they want, but it isn’t about Bill Clinton. Never has, never will be,” the statement added.
Broader Rightwing Commentary Remains Subdued
Nonetheless, overall comment on the political right was relatively subdued following the disclosure, particularly when compared with the vociferous calls for transparency that came before the legislative approval to enact a bill requiring the files' publication.
Loomer, who recently accepted press credentials at the Defense Department, had been one of the loudest proponents for a complete disclosure. Earlier this year, she chastised the administration broadly and Bondi specifically after a group of conservative influencers were given hard-copy binders of files that included no new information.
